Happy Birthday

Today is Drew's happy birthday. He is 72, I will be 72 in July. We don't give each other gifts for birthdays anymore. We just make the day special for the birthday person.

So, today he gets to take me to the oral surgeon! We will be in Cleveland, TN pondering another surgery to give me a molar that will meet another molar to chew with. I would be baking a cake to his liking since the oven works again, along with whatever he chose for a menu. Instead, we will be hunting a restaurant to enjoy a birthday meal. Then, when I bake his cake, it will be a surprise!

I did pull off a surprise party for his 50th. I had accomplices to help me, but I did the biggest part and totally surprised him. I flew my mother-in-law to our home and hid her until the party. He was really surprised when she calmly walked down the stairs to wish him a happy birthday. It was fun. I like preparing and organizing.

He tried to do the same for me, but instead of asking different people for minimal help, he dumped it in our daughter's lap. In frustration she told me how much she resented him leaving it all for her to do. "Why does he think I would want to throw a party for you, this whole thing is stupid!" I doubt she heard herself and never realized how it sounded to me. Like all mothers everywhere, I dismissed the words, as we all say things that might be offensive to others all the time and she is my child. It is always okay to dump on your mother, she will always forgive you!

I was surprised on my last birthday. We were traveling and scheduled to be at my nephew's house on my birthday. I didn't even know they knew it was my birthday! Of course, we all know it was his wife who was the thoughtful one. Men struggle to remember important dates. It was so sweet, though.

So, happy birthday to my sweet old man!

  1. Happy Birthday to Drew! Good thing I'm not singing the birthday song for him, as his name rhymes with a place I don't want to say he belongs in!

    1. When Gavin was a small boy he looked so much like Drew, it was downright scary. He must have been about 3 when he called his Papa to wish him a happy birthday and sang, "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday Papa Drew, you look like a monkey, and I look like you!" I can still here that sweet little voice. He no longer looks as much like him now that he is all grown up.

  2. My husband threw a surprise party for me for my 40th. I had no idea. We don't exchange gifts either at this point for any occasion.

    1. Drew has a hard time pulling off a surprise. He always gets excited about the surprise and starts giving me clues and then gets upset when I guess what it is. The only time he pulled it off was the Christmas he gave me Eddie. I was so heartbroken about losing Oscar and had no idea there would be another puppy in my life.
