Oh, The Horror (reader discretion is advised)

I am horrified beyond belief! The day started as most days do with me in the yard, a bevy of cats at my heels. I checked my garden and proceeded to straighten out the storage shed, but that is another post for another day.

We left to go get our haircuts and then came home with some take-out from a new restaurant. You know how it is; you have to try out the food before committing to pay for a dinner. Came home and I continued moving things around and putting away all my craft stuff. Drew went out and I am sure he told me his plans, but I admit I wasn't listening.

He came in with pictures. Prego had her kittens while we were out and about. Not in the nice cat bed I had put in the Catdominium for her, but under the steps going up to the upper deck. Of course I went out to see the new babies.

She seemed okay with the four kittens in various shades of gray. I came in and made some food for her and took it out, along with some water. I noticed that she was chewing on something as I approached. I thought she may have caught a mouse .......

SHE WAS EATING ONE OF HER BABIES!!!!!! I saw the little torso hanging out of her mouth and then I heard the crunch when she crushed the tiny skull. I was imploring her to stop, but she just continued, and I ran to get the deaf man in my house. He took the other three kittens, and they are on a towel in a box with the turtle heat lamp on them. Their little bellies are bulging, so I think she just fed them.

The man in the recliner is now on his way to get some replacement formula and tiny bottles. I am just sick about this. They were all alive, so that can't be why she chose to gobble up her baby. I know cats will do that if they think the kitten will not survive.

Two are pretty plain, just gray, but there is one that has stripes, like Martha, the boy cat. It is also the smallest one. I suppose I will be on feeding duty tonight and many nights following. My dogs are curious about the tiny little mewls they hear. I don't think they will object to having some cat siblings. Toni Louise was around when Martha came to live with us. She played with him and just accepted that he was another pet. I imagine the boy dogs will accept a cat as well. They missed Martha for a long time.

I would just as soon not sleep tonight, I will see Prego dining on her offspring!
