Love/Hate Relationship
As my cat population has dwindled down to three with Garfield showing up occasionally, Polo has been coming inside more often. We watch him closely as he interacts with the dogs. Bo loves this kitten. I am confident that he will not hurt the kitten.
Polo is big enough to object and defend himself. He wants to play with them and so far, he has not objected to anything they do. Eddie is so jealous. He wants to play with the cat, but he tends to want to bite him. Not hard. He just wants to put Polo's head in him mouth. I think he is torn between wanting to play and being so jealous he wants to hurt him.
Today I let the cat go. Out of my lap and into the floor. He examined the water and food dishes. Drank some water and then ate one piece of dog kibble. I watched Bo and Eddie watch him. After he tried out the doggie cuisine he walked toward Eddie and offered his head to rub against Eddie. Eddie opened his mouth to chew on the cat's head. Bo, ever vigilant was watching and jumped to the floor, got behind Eddie and bit him on his butt!!
Toni came out of the bathroom where she was napping next to the toilet. She greeted Polo and they sniffed each other. Toni turned and walked back to her favorite spot as if to impart that it was just a cat. She wondered what all the fuss was about.
Polo has been inside for quite a while now and it is clear that Bo will protect him, Toni will ignore him and Eddie is torn between his feelings of being the favored one and getting a new sibling that seems to take attention away from him.
I have seen Polo approach Lucy and try to cuddle. I know he misses his mama cat. Drew keeps scooping the kitten up, but I want him to interact with the dogs and learn to defend himself. Otherwise, he won't stand a chance against a predator. I would not object to Polo living exclusively inside, but I have nowhere to put a litter box that Bo can't get to. Bo is a curious boy and will want to investigate the contents and possibly taste them.
Eddie just washed Polo's face and Polo reached out to him. Just have to watch Eddie. Time will help. I try not to dwell on the fate of Marco and Gray Lady.
What a cute story!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I try not to think about the missing Momcat but her three boys and the feral are staying close to home. Of course, our area is a lot tamer than where you live. Cat comes and goes as she pleases but I make her come in when it's getting dark. Bad things happen to kitties in the dark. She's usually ready to come in when I call her. I do keep a litter box because there are days she just doesn't want to go outside. Fortunately Minnie is not a cat poop eater.
ReplyDelete:') I love this.
