Storm Ready

Finally. a quiet morning to contemplate life. The Man is helping out a neighbor, taking her to get her car from the repair shop. He likes to run errands and chauffer people around and I am happy to lend him out.

The dreaded cold front is coming!! Still warm today, though. Rumor has it that "we" will be trying to lure the 3 feral cats onto the enclosed porch. I think I might leave The Man to his own devises. I know how to get them onto the porch, but why would I ruin his victory when he finally has them in what they will conceive is a prison? Food, that's all he needs. A trail of tasty morsels to entice them through the door.

Kevin has successfully acclimated himself to living indoors. How do they know what that litter box is for? I am quite sure that Kevin is wondering where the canine litter box is and why there is a big pee pad on the floor at all times.

Toni's reusable diapers are here; we tried one on and she was not impressed! But her onesie that will keep the diaper on is also here, so tonight's the night! I am okay with changing out a pee pad on a daily basis, but she misses it. She will pee right on the edge and a foot clad only in socks will find the pee that is on the floor. Not my foot, but one of The Man's feet. I am smart enough to wear rubber soled slippers while inside.

Of course, The Man has slippers for his feet. His wife made sure of that. He wore them outside and stepped in poop. Why would you venture into dog business land with slippers on? Why can you not step lightly and look before letting your footfalls lead you through poop? If I step into something, I can feel it, never mind my foot covering.

As a result, he relies on socks to navigate the house in. He could, of course, clean the soiled slippers. I hope he is not waiting for his hand maiden to do it (that would be me), because I can barely bend over and walk. If I am going to endure pain to bend down, it will be for something important, and his slippers do not fall into that category.

The impending weather is adding to my joint misery. We have been advised to stay home starting tomorrow. Fine with me. I have my sewing machine set up on the table in the kitchen and have been doing mending. Of course, we might lose power, but we have emergency lights, a generator and back up propane heat. The stove is gas and I will still be able to cook.

No TV means we will have to talk to each other for entertainment. That could be a problem, especially if we can't charge his hearing aids. I imagine that someone coming up to our house for help and hearing us shouting at each other will have them turning away for another solution. We shopped for essentials yesterday and as always with impending storms, the shelves were depleted of perishables. No milk or bread left. We got 12 gallons of water and some staples. I noticed one particular aisle was bereft of Chef Boyardee cans. Canned pasta products that I am sure I ate as a child and cannot stand now. Today I will be making a pot of chili and some bread. probably a cake, as well. "Let them eat cake". Sounds like a plan to me.

If the refrigerator and freezer are not on, there is always the great outdoors to keep things frozen. That would be the enclosed porch. What will a pack of feral cats be able to do to my porch? Maybe we put the frozen food in the RV. No need to feed the felines with frozen delicacies!

  1. I have only been able to get my three outdoor cats (four before Momcat went missing) in the shed with a heater once when they were less than a year. So it's up to them to fund and snuggle down in the warmest spot they can find.

  2. I just made a big pot of chili! The temp is 15 now, and dropping, with a wind chill of -2. Might go down to -20 wind chill over the weekend. Not getting above freezing until Tuesday. We are supposedly getting 9-12 inches of snow, starting Saturday afternoon. I figure I'll be trapped until the middle of next week, considering the state of our mile of gravel road. The only bright spot is that Hick has given permission for my little Jack to come in the house for a bit. Not sure how Jack will take this, having been an outside dog for 9 years. I hope it doesn't make the weather harder on him, to be coming in and out. No pee pads here. I'm hoping he can hold it for a while.

  3. I am looking forward to being stuck inside tomorrow and Sunday. If it goes on longer than that I will be going stir crazy.
