Best Laid Plans
The phone woke me; it was the surgeon's office reminding me that I have an appointment tomorrow for my pre-op. It was storming and the rain beat down so loud on the roof it dulled the sound of anything else. I went back to bed and slept until 11am.
That is unheard of for me. I reminded The Man about the trip to Gainesville tomorrow and he left to get the oil changed. I was left with a quandary. Should I head to Wits End and continue my quest to organize, or should I get a casserole put together and ready for the oven and then go to Wits End? Wait, another option presented in my brain ..... should I stay and mop the floor, too?
None of the above happened. I was being very industrious as I cleaned the kitchen and got all the ingredients to the counter. I noted that 1/2 cabbage in the crisper and thought I should throw together some slaw to go with our dinner/supper tonight.
As you all know by now, I have precious little counter space in my tiny kitchen and am forced to keep small appliances wherever I can fit them. I have a ninja system with the food processor and blender and about a dozen parts. I keep everything except the base in the cabinet above the refrigerator. I am short, vertically challenged, that's me. There are some things I can reach easily, some things require a stepstool. This did. Everything is stacked precariously in that small cabinet. I had the part I needed in my hand when everything started to fall.
I lost my hold on the food processing piece, and it fell on my foot. Hurt, boy, did it hurt. But I have things falling on my feet all the time. Usually, I just keep going with whatever adventure I may be about to undertake. I picked up everything and got the processor to the counter and walked back to the fridge to fold the stepstool when I noticed my shoe was full of blood and I was leaving a trail.
This annoyed me. Pain, I am used to pain; but now I will definitely have to mop. I left footprints down the hall to the bathroom and stuck my foot in the tub, shoe and all. I did not realize a flip flop help so much liquid! I ran cold water on the cut. Wow, that hurt!
I inspected the cut. A nice straight line, but I can see tendons. Well, crap on a cracker. It could use a few stitches. But, if I am very careful, I think I can close the wound with steri-strips. Maybe some glue, too. The margins are nice and straight, and I know I can fix it.
In the meantime. I called The Man getting oil changed and requested some steri-strips. I didn't mention all the blood; else he would have told them to stop and driven home. I am sitting with foot up and iced while I wait.
The wound closed nicely and I am still sitting here with ice on it. Fortunately, the two band aids I applied had the skin closed and The Man didn't actually see the cut open. He still thought we should go adorn the ER waiting room until my tiny cut would be seen to. I just don't have time for that!
He has mopped some paths on the floors. Just where I walked. I would have taken advantage of the fact that the mop was in my hand and mopped the entire house. Not that big a project, the house is only 350 square feet. I will sit here for a bit to let everything stick together, then I will cook our dinner and unload the washer. I should have just shredded the cabbage by hand, but the hand hurts when I do repetitive motions.
I am trying to get as much done as I can before the surgery. I will have to let the hand heal before I start working with my hammer and drill. You know what they say about the best laid plans .....
You're stronger than I am...if the same accident had happened to me I would have been done for the day!
ReplyDeleteI am the glue that hold our lives together here, so I can't always afford such luxuries. I am milking my injury for all it is worth, so don't worry about me! Actually, after I iced it down, the pain was minimal and i was able to walk the next day with just soreness. I am surprised that I have no big bruise to alert others of my accident!
DeleteSteri-strips and glue is probably what the ER would have done.
ReplyDeleteWhile I would agree that the steri-strips were sufficient, they would have stitched it based on the location of the cut and the fact that it cut through all the layers of skin and fatty tissue to expose the tendons. I know not to flex my foot or bend that toe and it was clean and I cleaned it some more. Today it is just a little tender, need to leave the strips for at least 10 days for the skin to knit back together.
DeleteMy little dog tore a gash in both my hands on top where the skin is so thin. They were both glued shut at urgent care. I don't think stitches would have held.
ReplyDeleteI have that thin skin on my hands and ankles and that will not hold stitches! The skin would just tear through the stitches and make a bigger wound.
DeleteMy best to you on allyour medical issues. My cat jumped up on a dresser and knocked off a icture frame, nicked the back of my ankle and it is taking its time healing. I should have bandaged it. We're tough old gals.
ReplyDeleteHaving worked in an ER, I know that I would have been seen last after more serious injuries. I am not that patient when I have to wait and know I can just fix it myself!
DeleteGood thing you're a fix-it kind of gal! Also good that your man figured out what a mop was for, even if it didn't occur to him that a mop can be used for parts of a floor without a bloody trail.
ReplyDeleteBlood and dog pee is what my mop sees the most of. Problem is that he vacuums, sweeps and mops trails, never going under or behind anything in the way. I think I will purchase some stick-on stars to apply to his shirt for jobs well done, or half done in his case.
