A Magical Relationship

Yesterday I would have told you how healthy my kitten is. It would cry for food and then be frantic to eat. It was a joy to watch that tiny mouth fill with formula, then swallow and smack its lips. The little legs were strong, and the cry was loud.

All day long I would scoop it up and present the tip of the syringe into the mouth while the kitten turned its head this way and that way looking for the source of the formula. I have been keeping the kitten warm with one of those rice bag heating pads. The kitty would snuggle down into the warm hollow of the towel covering the heating pad and sleep after eating and peeing. I was a little concerned that I had not seen any poop, but she pooped in the night, and I discovered this at the 1 am feeding.

Kitty has been eating about 2 cc from the syringe. When kitty has had all it wants, it will push the formula out and onto its little face and lips. So cute, it could be a "got milk" ad. The 4 am feeding did not go well. Kitty kept pushing the formula out with its tongue. Finally ate about 1 cc and I did the bathroom duties and put kitty in her bed with a newly warmed heating pad. I have been very careful not to get it too hot, as I didn't want to cook it! While waiting for the heating pad, I put the kitten in my bra, close to my armpit, since that is a hot spot on our bodies.

Today it just refuses any offer of food, and it started coughing. Half the day is gone, and kitty has not had but a drop or two of formula. I am so worried now. I doubt Mama cat ever fed my kitty, so no colostrum to help with natural immunities. So far two kittens have perished. One is buried, the other one digested. We have not been able to locate where she took the two she decided to keep. She comes out to eat every evening, but so far, she has been crafty enough to avoid being followed. She would never win Mama Cat nurturing award!

I know that things are not looking good, and I will be so sad. I was looking forward to having a cat to love like I loved my Martha. It was a magical relationship.

  1. Poor little kitty. At least its fate is better than that of the other two, no matter what happens.
